Australian WTE technology finds a home in Canada
While Europe and parts of Asia were busy building and operating WTE facilities over the past 20 years, Canada and the U.S. were perfecting the art of landfilling. However, change is upon North America and thermal treatment is now considered a viable alternative to burying BTU-containing material in the ground.

One global player includes Renewable Energy Solutions (Entech), headquartered in Australia. The privately-owned company has been around for 20 years developing and building waste gasification systems. April 21, 2010 County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works Supervisors Approve New Conversion Technology Project

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has given the green light to a series of demonstration projects designed to convert non-recyclable waste into clean energy.

The Southern California Conversion Technology Demonstration Project will use state-of-the-art methods, including anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, and gasification, to break down virtually all solid, non-recyclable waste into renewable material, such as biodiesel and ethanol fuel.

While conversion technology has been implemented in Japan, Europe and Canada, the County’s demonstration sites will be the first of their kind in the United States. Read more

November 20, 2009 Port Hope energy-from-waste plant has hurdles to jump

The announcement about an energy-from-waste conversion plant planned for Wesleyville is certainly welcome news for the Port Hope community.

In the current less-than-stellar manufacturing environment and with growing concerns over what to do with the ever-expanding mountains of garbage we produce every day, a technology that boasts a 98 per cent diversion rate for municipal waste is good news for the environment. According to Renewable Energy Management Inc. (REM), the project's proponent, the plant will use advanced technology to convert waste into a synthetic gas, largely methane, which is burned in a standard steam boiler to produce energy, while excess heat is used to dry the next batch of waste. The resulting ash is clean and can be sold as a construction material, which could render landfills unnecessary. Read more


November 19, 2009 Low-temperature gasification plant planned for Port Hope

Northhumberland News The Independent By: Jennifer O'Meara article 140548 PORT HOPE -- A new company is planning to build a low-temperature energy-from-waste conversion facility in rural Port Hope, and is already moving ahead with the project.

Renewable Energy Management Inc. (REM) has purchased a 23-acre site on Wesleyville Road, south of Mail Road. The company has recently begun the provincial approval process for the facility. Read more
